In collaboration with Amsterdam based cinema Filmhuis Cavia, Asian Movie Night will screen selected films from various Asian countries every month.
'Asia' is a political term that speaks not just of geography/race but has its own narrative of colonial/imperial/modern history. Asia has been used to frame "others" by reinforcing a sense of exoticism. We would like to invite you to stretch further than that through deepening a cross-cultural understanding. In doing so, we are aware that each country’s social issues are laid out in a different context and we care to pay attention to each other.
Our first selected film is Family in the Bubble, directed by Min-ji Ma. This film is an autobiography of the director’s family, showing their struggle in a speculative housing crisis in Seoul. Ma’s family tragic echos the dark side of the monstrous modernization that South Korea went through in the past decades, yet it is a witty and charming film. We're looking forward to seeing you at Filmhuis Cavia on October 22nd,20:00!
